Jobs: change your business type
What changing a business type adds to your work setup, what it replaces on the invoicing side, what it never removes, and why trying again is safe.
On this page
Your workspace may use a different word for its work; the screens are the same.
Your business type sets up how you invoice and how you track your work. Changing it adds the new type's work setup to what you already have. A business that moves to Towing & Roadside gains the Call words and the towing record types. One that moves to Insurance Agency gains Policies and the Policy and Service types.
Change it
- Open Pending tasks, then Choose your business type. Or open Settings and select Choose or change it next to Business type.
- Under What kind of work do you do?, pick the closest match. The right side shows what it sets up: its description, the products and services it adds, its payment terms and its invoice numbers.
- Select Use this type.
The first time a business picks a type, it is set up at once. When the business already has a type, a preview opens first: Change to followed by the new type. Your records and the invoices you have written stay as they are. You can also open Businesses, select the business, and select Change type on its Business type tab; after you pick a type, the same preview opens.
- Billing lists the products and services added, changed or no longer in your list, the invoice fields added, changed or no longer offered, and any change of payment terms.
- Work records says what your work will be called, lists the types added, and says how many of your types gain new questions and how many entries are pinned.
Select Apply, or Cancel to keep the current type. You may be asked to confirm it is you. You return to Pending tasks, which says what happened.
Owners and admins change the business type.
What it adds to your work setup
- Record types. The new type's record types are added and published, ready to use.
- Questions, stages and documents. A record type you already have from that same business type gains only what it lacks. What it has is not changed, and your own labels are kept. The change is published as a new revision, so older records keep theirs.
- Words. The new words are set only if nobody in the business has changed its work settings yet.
- Pins. The business type's pins are added while there is room for them, up to five in all.
What it keeps
- Every work record you have, with its answers, stage and revision.
- Every record type you made yourself, and the ones from your earlier business type.
- Words and pins a person has set.
- A record type that is archived, or that is not used by this business, is left alone.
Nothing is removed from your work setup.
What it replaces on the invoicing side
The new type's products and services, fees, invoice fields, tax, payment terms and reminders replace yours. A number format you customised is kept. Invoices you have already written keep their lines.
Trying again is safe
Applying the same business type twice changes nothing in your work setup the second time. If a change stops partway, select Use this type again. What already happened is not done twice.
