See who viewed and paid a payment link

What a payment link's Activity window shows about emails sent and openings, what it leaves out, and where to find the payments made through the link.

Last updated Web

Each payment link keeps two short logs: the emails you sent with it and the times its page was opened. You see both in the link's Activity window. Payments are recorded separately, in Payments and in Reports. The logs do not say who the person behind an opening is.

Open the Activity window

  1. Open Payment links.
  2. In the row menu for the link, choose Activity.

Every member of the workspace can open it, viewers included. A member who is limited to one business can open Activity only for that business's links. The window shows the 50 most recent entries of each kind, newest first.

Sent

The Sent table lists each email sent with the link, from Send by email. For each one you see when it was made and its status, such as queued, sent, failed or blocked. A reason follows when the email did not go.

Reason shown What it means
NO_VERIFIED_EMAIL The client has no usable email address
EMAIL_DISABLED Email is switched off for your workspace
RATE_LIMITED Too many emails went out in that minute
SANDBOX_RECIPIENT A sandbox workspace emails only its own team

The table does not show who pressed Send, or which client it went to. A link that was disabled or expired before delivery is not sent, and the entry shows as failed. One replaced in the meantime goes out with its new address. An assistant or the Agent can only send a link after a person approves it.

Opened

The Opened table has one row each time the payment page loads. A row shows:

  • When, to the minute, in UTC.
  • Where, an approximate region and country when the hosting service supplies them, or a dash.
  • Device: iPhone or iPad, Android, Web browser, Automated or Unknown. A phone's browser counts as the phone.

Behind the scenes a shortened network address is stored with each opening. It is never shown. Rows are deleted after one year. The payer is not told about the log.

An opening means the page loaded. It does not mean the person read it, and it does not name them, because a payment link is open to anyone who holds the address. A link that has expired, been disabled or been replaced logs nothing. A very busy source can hit a rate limit, and then its openings are not logged.

Where the payments are

A payment is not shown in the Activity window. Find it in three places:

  • Payment links shows how many payments each link has taken, such as 3 of 10, and its status.
  • Payments lists each payment with its date, method and amount. For a link payment the invoice column says Payment link and the client column is a dash. Open the payment to see which link it came through and any card fee.
  • Reports, in the Payment links tab, totals payments, card fees, refunds and net by link for a date range.

A payment received through a link counts as one send when it succeeds. That is true even at your plan's limit. See What counts as a send.

The workspace Activity page, open to owners and admins, records changes to a link and the person who made them: created, edited, disabled, reactivated, and given a new address.
